Put the Devil to Flight

The Bible says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Many people want to resist the devil, but few understand that true resistance only comes from submission to God. Peter reminds us to “be sober, be vigilant” (1 Peter 5:8–9). The challenge is that people often try to resist the enemy from a place of emotion, frustration, or anger, without first submitting to the Word of God.

You can be so focused on your problem, your situation, that you are blinded to what God wants to accomplish in your life. Sometimes, someone fights the devil in an area God never ordained for them. It was never their place of appointment. It was never their place of blessing. Yet, they fight for that place, striving for a position not assigned to them. The Bible is clear: submit yourself to God. There is a will of God for your life. There is a Word of God for your life, and it is this Word that must guide your battle.

Daniel provides the perfect example of submission in spiritual warfare. He meditated on the Word God had given to Israel through Jeremiah. When he stood in intercession, he did not stand for his personal needs—he stood for the Word. Timothy was instructed to wage warfare using the words and prophecies God had given him. Similarly, Daniel waged spiritual warfare aligned with the prophecies from Jeremiah. This teaches us that it is not enough to resist the devil; we must resist him submitted to God and grounded in His Word.

Who is God? God is His Word. What is the Word of God for your life? Before attempting to resist the enemy, we must know the Word God has spoken concerning our circumstances, finances, family, health, or destiny. Many times, people fight emotionally—they are angry, frustrated, or resentful—but they are not fighting from the authority of God’s Word.

Jude provides a powerful example in his reference to the body of Moses. In Jude 1:9, it says that the archangel Michael contended with the devil over the body of Moses, but he did not dare bring a railing accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” This teaches us that even the angel of war needed the authority of God to overcome the enemy. Victory in spiritual warfare comes not from emotion or human effort, but from submission to God and alignment with His Word. Michael’s example shows us that it is not enough to resist the devil; we must resist him in the authority of God’s Word and under God’s will.

We are warned to “be sober, be vigilant” (1 Peter 5:8). Soberness requires wisdom in judgment, and vigilance requires diligence and aggression because the devil is a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Yet, believers have authority to resist him—in finances, marriage, health, and life—through the Word of God. The Bible reminds us that “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4). This is a clear call to fight the right way: spiritually, not emotionally, and aligned with God’s Word.

So today, pray this prayer: “Father, allow me to understand the Word You have for my finances, my life, and my destiny.” When you discover the prophetic Word for your situation, use it as a weapon in spiritual warfare: “Father, we pull down this resistance in our finances because You have promised…,” and then cite the promise God has given concerning your health, life, or destiny. If you cannot recall a promise, press in until God awakens you to it. There is a promise for you, but you must align yourself to receive it.

The challenge for many is not just fighting the devil but doing so in the right way. Today, understand that resisting the devil begins with submission to God. Stand on His Word. Fight only in the place He has ordained. Be sober, vigilant, and aligned with the promises He has spoken over your life. This is how you wage the right warfare—and victory is guaranteed.

God bless you.
